Excuses, Excuses…

We all make excuses, whether its because we don’t feel like doing something or because we are afraid that if we do try we will fail.

A few years back, I decided that there was no way I could go back to school. I had every excuse in the book as to why I shouldn’t… I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money, I am not smart enough, I am terrified of math and I already have a good job. I even had the excuse of not wanting to get stuck in rush hour traffic when I drove to class after work. After all, there was nothing that took me out that far west anymore and it would just be out of my way.

Later, at a seminar, I listened to a colleague of mine who has a PhD talk about how he struggled in school especially with math and had once given up on college.

I started to realize that I was never going to be fully ready and my life and circumstances are never going to be absolutely perfect for what lies next. I needed to make it happen within my current situation. And surely, there are worse people at math than me. Since then, I have gone back to school and slowly but surely I am working towards a degree, even if it takes a lifetime!

When you find yourself starting to make excuses for something you don’t feel up to or are afraid of, try asking yourself what will happen if you don’t do it. The answer will probably be nothing. You just might miss out on a wonderful experience or opportunity.
